The MREA was founded in 1990, when a small group of folks in central Wisconsin responded to an article in Home Power Magazine. The editor, Richard Perez, suggested our country needed more energy fairs to educate the public about the benefits of renewable energy and provide a networking opportunity for those already involved in the field. Thus the first Energy Fair was held at the fairgrounds in Amherst, Wisconsin in 1990.

Soon after the first Energy Fair, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) was formed with a mission to promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable living through education and demonstration. The organization grew steadily, and in 1999, MREA moved its headquarters, ReNew the Earth Institute, to Custer, Wisconsin, its current location. In 2009, they opened a second office in Milwaukee to better serve southeast Wisconsin.
